The yellow morel mushrooms are beginning to pop up all over ... so that can mean only one thing.  The politicians have gotta be in full blown heat.

For those of you who are newbies to election cycles, do not despair.  It's like eating beans. This, too, shall pass.  The exaggerations and misrepresentations and misquotes and — oh, who am I kidding -- threats and lies — are in full bloom right now!

As much as I regret having to tell you this, prevarications have been a part of election dialogue longer than any of us have been around.  But it's fair to say the current Commander in Chief has taken it into the stratosphere.  And sad as it is, there are locals who have jumped on the Trump manure wagon.

Senator Goode incurred the wrath of Trump when he had the audacity to go to the State House and actually represent the wishes of his constituents.  Goode's vote put him among the majority of senators who voted to leave the Congressional districts as they are — and NOT re-draw Indiana's congressional districts to please Trump and pad the Republican majority in the coming election.

Before the Senate session, Senator Goode had held listening sessions in his district soliciting the wishes of the citizens he represents. To say the turnout was a brisk would be a major understatement.  Folks stood in line in chilly weather and waited in standing room only crowds to tell the Senator in no uncertain terms they DID NOT want their Congressional district boundaries changed in an off-year shenanigan!

Now Senator Goode is the target of nonstop diatribes — (that means "bull-hocky") -- paid for by money traced right back to the 'Stomp Out Enemies of Trump'.

I have known Senator Goode personally a good long while. You cannot find a more decent and honorable man if you spend the rest of your life looking.  He has devoted his life to doing good work for our little community, and I believe we're better for it.  He will listen to you and help you if he can find a way to do it.

Don't be sucked in by hatred and deception. Listen to candidates who tell you the positive things they hope to do for our community.  Hatred and negativity already pollute our political world.  Look for those candidates who care about making things better, who tell you what they intend to do in the future — and look at what they have done in the past.  We need all the good works we can get.

Good work by everybody who worked to get rid of all kinds of unwanted trash last Saturday at another city-wide lean-up.  Hauteans are really getting the hang of 'load 'em up & head 'em out!' Those big scoopers and scrapers and dozers and trash trucks and dump trucks were rolling in and heading out like nobody's business! It was a thing of beauty to see everybody from City and County governments, the great Neighbors Helping Neighbors organization, and Republic, all working together like the well- oiled machine they have become. One of the best programs ever!

Saturday evening's Terre Haute South Vigo High School's 24th Annual Hall of Distinction Banquet at the Country Club of Terre Haute was the social event of the season.
    Honorees this year were:
Col. David P. Cooper, Class of 1995
Rodney W. Smith, Class of 1982
Anthony A. Tanoos, Class of 1974
It was a star-studded evening with an overflow audience filled with dignitaries, great live music from wonderful food impeccably served.  Are you getting the picture that it was one snazzy evening?! served with a great band, so impeccable one might have thought they were attending the Academy Awards.
It was a wonderful reminder how many distinguished alums have matriculated through those hallowed halls.  Terre Haute South Vigo does indeed have some mighty outstanding folks from yesteryear and today!

Alumni Col. David Cooper and Rodney Smith have piled up astonishing lifetime achievements.  But Tony Tanoos has been a personal friend of mine for many years, so I'd like to share with you how much this award means to him.  He has not stopped talking about the award and the ceremony and all his friends and teachers he had and on and on and on -- since the day he learned he would be one of the honorees.  Even before this year, nearly every conversation I've had with Tony, regardless of the subject, the topic arose of the great education he received at THSV.  Absolute truth.  And when the recent subject of school consolidation came around, it impossible to reiterate the many arguments he presented for a superior education being produced in smaller school environments.
Therefore, it should not have come as a surprise to anyone present who really knows Tony that his acceptance speech turned to the community's current hot topic of school consolidation.  And the lawyer in him kicked in,  and he laid out a real tearjerker of a final summation.
'All the teachers knew every kid... Every kid was special....Kids were proud of being a South Vigo BRAVE!  And nothing was better than beating NORTH at everything' And so many other pronouncements — straight from his heart.
It'd likely be a safe bet to say there's not a THSV alum that loves that school more than TONY TANOOS.  He is probably still at the microphone talking about what a wonderful school South is and how he loves it!   And we all love Tony just as much!
SOIL & WATER poobah BRENDAN KEARNS reports beef cattle farmers are extremely concerned that the feed they buy for cattle this fall — that being corn and hay — will be considerably higher because the farmers who raise those crops are already paying much higher prices now for fuel & fertilizer.  And heaven help everybody trying to buy groceries, period.

Seems there's not much positive coming out of the Iran situation and for sure not for the families of our troops over there.  Remember everybody involved in your prayers - and I mean everybody.  Over there and over here and around the world. These are troubled times we're living in right now.

Strolling into the Saratoga at lunchtime on occasion, you might spot PETER SACOPULOS, Attorney-at-Law, and nationally recognized breeder of horse racing steeds.  But those are not the only areas in which he is highly esteemed.  Peter has been dubbed by his peers as Best Dressed Attorney in Indiana!

Take a look around at all the good work the Terre Haute Street Department has been doing patching and paving those potholes Ol' Man Winter left behind!  It's hard to imagine the hundreds of miles of streets and alleys those folks have to take are of -- but they sure are on the ball considering how grizzly the winter was this year!!!

This question came up at lunch:  You're a big winner on "JEOPARDY."  The prize is a trip on a rocket ship around the moon and back with NASA astronauts -- or $500,000 cash.  Which would you choose?

There's a restaurant in Burlington Plaza under new ownership you should try.  It's called YUKI — pronounced 'YOOKY' --- and it is JAPANESE cuisine.  Here's the deal.  This place used to be called Panda Garden.

The owner when it started was a Chinese man called Allen.  He and his wife owned it. They had two little kids, who grew up there. The kids would come in after school and sit at a table toward the back and do their homework. They were a happy little family. But the wife became ill and died.  And the kids grew up and went off to college.

Allen ran it for several years, business was good, but eventually,  it seemed there were just too many memories there.  Allen didn't sell it.  He simply locked the door and left.

Eventually just a few years ago, somebody rented the place and tried to give it a go, but no dice.  It was not good and the Board of Health couldn't get them to understand there are rules and regulations you must attain.  Eventually another manager tried it.  Once again,  no go.  And last year, somebody tried it again, but it was just the same old story.  Great sign on the outside — 'YUKI' but inside, yucky. Closed.

But now YUKI is open, clean, and sparkling and the food is really EXCELLENT!! REALLY GOOD!
You owe it to yourself to give it a go. There are several very nice Japanese dishes on the menu, and Chinese and Indonesian. The prices are reasonable and the presentations are beautiful.  It was terrific.

The new guy didn't have the money to change the sign , which would have been better — but he sure did change the cleanliness. It is impeccably clean and bright.
I have no involvement or ownership or investment in Yuki ( pronounced "YOOKY") — but I do love Asian cuisine — and these folks know how to prepare it -- and I hope you'll help them make it a success.

It's not easy to just rant and rave about how nuts some of the stuff is that  DJTrump does.  And I swear I try to lay off whenever possible.   But I'm here to tell you that picture of him as Jesus healing the sick — was just about as sick as it gets.  After the excrement hit the oscillator, Trump tried to blame it on anybody and everybody else.  But we all know who generated that piece of doo-doo.  Somebody needs to get that man some SOMINEX.  Everybody would be better off if he could just get a good 10 or 12 or 14 hours of sleep a night! zzzzzzzz
If you or someone you love is looking for a really good job, you may be living right.  The gigantic construction project on the north side of Sullivan County is going to require more construction workers than most local unions can provide, and they're seeking hale and hearty folks who want to work hard for really good money. I stopped in at the Laborers' Local # 204 at 401 Poplar last week and they were taking applications. And that's a really good job!

And I'll be watching my good buddy, JOHN HENRY ANDERSON, in his new adventure at Terre Haute South Vigo, which he will be attending.  John Henry and I are ISU Basketball fans, and I'll hopefully be making my way to THSV to watch John Henry play before long!

Don't forget early in person voting at the Annex and the Mall.  Be a good American and vote for good and sensible candidates who have the interest of you, your family, and your community in their hearts.

That's not all we know, but it's all we're telling — till next week!
